Distribution	Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea and Persian Gulf to Durban, rarely as far as East London, South Africa. Also reported from the southern coast of Madagascar. Migrated to the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal.

Short description	Dorsal spines (total): 11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 10. Dull colored.
Biology	Caught in shallow coastal waters, mainly in muddy quiet areas. In the northern part of the Indian Ocean, it is caught all year round and consumed fresh. In the southern part of the Indian Ocean, it is fished mainly for bait. Feeds mainly on algae, also invertebrates such as crustaceans and worms.
